Subnation 2: Texas
Before I begin, let me explain my irrational fear of Texas. Texas is large and full of unpredictable causes and effects. I personally believe that Texas as it’s own nation could do many things. Texas could screw up in a multitude of ways, and many liberals think it would. It could be conquered by Mexico. It could turn into a corporate police state, where the citizens are even more sheltered and oppressed by government completely corrupted and infiltrated by corporations. It could take most of the south and Plains area with it. However, I see things a different way.
The Republic of Texas will inevitably become a capitalist paradise. It will continue to have an excellent economy, if it’s 2010 GDP of 1.3 trillion is any indicator. That’s more than countries like Australia, Argentina, and Indonesia, while just under Canada and Spain. Texas could also potentially have a respectable military, although larger countries (see: a still somewhat-intact USA) could defeat them if they started trouble.
Texas, however, would be strange when it comes to social freedoms. It could border on anarchy, as I see Texas being a libertarian nation. Basic civil rights would be upheld, but past that it would be fair game. Figuratively speaking, you could get away with murder in Texas, simply because there’s no explicit law against it. Many things would be decriminalized but not legalized, and many things would lose legal status but not be explicitly criminalized, leaving this gray area of what exactly is legal and what is illegal. However, due to a strong economy and respectable military, and in spite of social anarchy, I see Texas being a strong nation.
